Dear Camp Families,
Usually at this time of the year, the Board of Directors and staff are in the midst of planning another fabulous summer for our girls! The month of May kicks off the clean-up of K-24 – turning on the water, clearing the cobwebs, and sprucing up camp after a long winter. We’d be giving tours to new families who haven’t seen our beautiful place deep in the woods yet. We’d be gearing up for staff week. But instead, we have spent the past couple of months completely focused on one task; determining if we could safely operate camp this summer for our girls.
We have consulted the experts: The American Camp Association, CDC, the NYS Department of Health, Harriman State Park officials and our physician consultant to help us come to a decision about the summer. As we have reviewed the federal, state, and local guidelines, the consensus is simple; there is no guaranteed way that we can protect our campers, staff, and community from the current pandemic.
It is with a heavy heart that the Board of Directors voted this past Saturday, May 16, 2020 to cancel our regular camp program for this summer.
Many of you already know that the safety of our camp family has always been our #1 priority. We meet and exceed the American Camp Association accreditation and safety standards every year and have been awarded the “Safety First” award from our insurance company for over 10 years.
This has been the most difficult decision we have faced in over 83 years and did not come to this decision easily. We know you are disappointed, we are too, but we feel strongly that our ability to provide both a safe and fun camping experience this summer is simply not possible.
What Will Happen This Summer?
Our Board of Directors and Den staff will still be meeting regularly to evaluate the evolving situation. While we would love to offer some time at camp to see you face-to-face, we unfortunately cannot make any promises with still so many unknowns. But camp is about the people, not the place, so we plan to connect with you virtually through some special online camp experiences that we hope you enjoy! We are currently still in the process of planning what this might look like, but as soon as we have a more structured plan in place, we will share that with you all!
We are also hoping to work on some lingering projects around Camp. Growing grass on the meadow is an actual goal of ours! We’re also hoping to do some regular maintenance on the cabins, do some weeding and plant some trees. We’re also looking at new, fun programming for next summer like adding some new elements to the ropes course!
What Happens Next?
We know you have questions. Members from our Board of Directors will be reaching out to you all soon to discuss those questions and review your registration options. We will be updating our website to include this information and will be the best place to check for the latest updates and news. If you have any questions you can email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Last, but not least, is the question of your 2020 registration. We have come up with three options that we hope provide enough flexibility to meet your family’s unique needs that are outlined below. We are asking all families who have already registered for 2020 to fill out the form in your email letting us know how you would like to proceed.
We truly appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate this uncertainty together, and hope that you all have a safe, healthy and wonderful summer and hope to see you soon!
